Spending Money On Travel
How-to-save-money travel articles flood the world wide web. Money-saving tips and tricks continuously get pinned, tweeted, shared, and ‘grammed. Why do we see this phenomenon day after day, month after month, and year after year? Meanwhile, according to the U.S. Travel Association, “Direct spending by resident and international travelers in the U.S. averaged $3.0 billion a day, $124.3 million an hour, $2.1 million a minute and $34,500 a second.” Which begs the question, are we sure this money for travel is well spent?
In other words, people are traveling. Whether they’re saving money or not doesn’t seem to affect their decision to embark on their journey, but are they getting the most for their money?
How can you ensure that your trip is worth every hard-earned penny?
Set a purpose for your journey.
Make your trip purposeful by setting expectations and desired outcomes. This is easy. All you have to do is consciously acknowledge your “why.” Everyone’s reasons for travel are different. Are you looking to have an adventure? Would you like to strengthen family bonds? Some travel to take part in authentic cultural experiences or learn about the history of a new community.
Why are you traveling? Answering this question helps you to set a purpose. When travelers carefully choose destinations and planned activities with this goal in mind, the value of this journey becomes so much more than monetary.
Choose travel destinations and experiences which truly speak to you.
Quick, inexpensive getaways are great escape if you aren’t interested in achieving much more. However, every one of those hard-earned dollars are precious. Use them toward a trip that’s worth every penny for you. That is to say, your destination should fulfill a dream, serve a personal or family purpose, or inspire you. Be specific and deliberate in your decisions. Travel with intention.
For example, don’t plan a trip to the Caribbean just because “that’s where we always go on vacation.” Alternatively, get enlightened by history and grow closer to nature by selecting an excursion to the Silver Bank. Exploring this destination located between the Dominican Republic and the Turks and Caicos drenches visitors in the areas’ rich Spanish history. Moreover, travelers get to experience the rare opportunity of swimming with humpback whales. An up close and personal experience with these majestic creatures? A trip like that would be worth every penny.
Engage in experiences.
You get the most bang for your buck when you’re all in. Participation is crucial. Be present. Remain engaged. Approach excursions, adventures, and experiences with an open mind. For example, if your purpose is to learn a new language, use it everywhere you go. Don’t let fear or shame prevent you from speaking to the locals in their native tongue. If your goal is to learn about a specific culture, eat the weird-looking meal served during that exploratory cruise. Allowing yourself to become immersed in every single experience makes them priceless.
Every Trip Should be Worth Every Penny
Spending money on travel isn’t frivolous. With each trip, adventurers gain cultural awareness, experience personal growth, and inevitably learn something new. Look for the best deals, but let your search be rooted in purpose and meaning. Book confidently, knowing that the hard-earned money you’re spending is worth every penny.
